MEDFORD -- Junior Lynn Cooper (Wilton, CT) scored twice, including on a penalty kick, to lift the Tufts University Jumbos to a 3-2 non-league victory over the Simmons College Sharks in New England women's college soccer action on Thursday afternoon.
Visiting Simmons College, which entered the game with a 5-6 record and lost to Bates 7-0 on September 27, put a scare into the Jumbos by scoring the first two goals of the game. Junior Katie Dulac (Manchester, NH) scored on Simmons' first shot of the game just 50 seconds in, then freshman Lesley McShea (Lebanon, CT) made it 2-0 at 24:08.
Tufts (9-2 overall), ranked eighth in New England this week, cut the deficit in half when Cooper converted a penalty kick at 25:42. Simmons took the 2-1 lead into the half and kept it for more than 20 minutes into the second. Tufts then scored twice within two minutes to win it: freshman standout Jess Trombly (Nashua, NH) at 67:18 and Cooper again at 69:00. The victory moved Tufts' streak of regular-season non-conference wins to 13.
Junior Mara Schanfield (St. Paul, MN) made her first start of the year in goal and got the win with seven saves. Simmons senior Erin McElhinney (North Reading, MA) finished with nine saves.
