MEDFORD -- Goals by sophomore Becky Mann (Ridgefield, CT) and junior Carmen Mikacenic (Seattle, WA) less than three minutes apart early in the game gave host Tufts a 2-0 lead and the Jumbos rolled to a 4-0 victory over Gordon College in New England women's college soccer action on Tuesday afternoon.
Tufts thoroughly controlled play, finishing with a 26-2 advantage in shots and 8-0 in corner kicks. Defenders Mann and Mikacenic came up to knock in their first goals of the season barely 14 minutes into the game, then senior forward Amanda Nagler (Beverly Hills, CA) extended the lead to 3-0 with just over two minutes left in the first half.
Visiting Gordon would not get a shot at the Tufts net in the second half. Jumbo sophomore keeper Mara Schanfield (St. Paul, MN), starting in place of injured captain Randee McArdle (East Nassau, NY), earned her first career shutout with two saves. Senior midfielder Jenny Lambert (Springfield, MA) scored the fourth and final Tufts goal at 54:02 with an assist to Nagler.
Tufts, ranked fifth in New England this week, moved to 3-1 overall. Gordon dropped to 3-2-1 as the Jumbos won their fourth straight versus the Fighting Scots.
