MEDFORD -- Connecticut College senior co-captain Meghan Welch (Framingham, MA) scored in each half and the Camels defense withstood heavy pressure from host Tufts to post a 2-0 victory over the Jumbos in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.
Welch scored from the outside right to put Conn up 1-0 23:54 into the game, then importantly padded the lead to two by converting a pass from sophomore Lena Eckhoff (Brattleboro, VT) with 18:43 remaining in regulation. Welch's goals were the first scored against the Jumbos this season after two shutout wins.
The Camels (2-2) were opportunistic, scoring twice on 11 shots and no corner kicks. Tufts (2-1) put 23 shots at Conn senior keeper Amanda Baltzley (Bloomfield Hills, MI) and earned eight corners, but could only come as close as the cross bar on a few occasions. Baltzley had six saves while Tufts junior keeper Randee McArdle (East Nassau, NY) and sophomore Mara Schanfield (St. Paul, MN) combined for six with three apiece.
Both Tufts and Conn advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinalists last fall. The Jumbos were ranked first in this week's New England Div. III poll.
