Thursday, January 9, 2003
WELLESLEY - Trailing 45-42 with 6:58 remaining in the game, Tufts University used a 8-0 run to take a five point lead at 50-45 with just over three minutes remaining, and never looked back, to earn its fifth straight win, defeating Wellesley, 56-51, in a non-conference women's basketball match-up Thursday at Wellesley. With the win, Tufts improves to 5-1 while Wellesley drops to 5-4 overall. Tufts used four points on a jumper and a lay-up from Jessica Powers (Massapequa, NY) in the decisive run.
Tufts, which had eight players in the scoring column, was led by 14 points from Kate Gluckman (Morrisville, VT) and 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds from Powers. Wellesley, hampered by 36.7% shooting from the field (18-for-49), had two players in double-digits and was led by sophomore Bridget Harris' 16 points, six rebounds and three steals while senior Kelly Grover chipped in with a solid 12-point, seven-rebound, four-blocked shot performance.
The victory was the first for Tufts against Wellesley since January 1998. The five-game winning streak is the longest since a similar stretch early in the 2000-01 season. Tufts hosts Smith on Saturday in their first home game of the new semester.
