HARTFORD -- Tufts placed six players in double figures as it defeated Trinity, 80-43, in NESCAC women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon. The Jumbos were led by sophomore guard Erin Connolly (Syosset, NY), who contributed 14 points along with five steals and four assists.
Tufts, ranked eighth in this week's New England poll, improved to 14-3 overall and 3-2 in the NESCAC, while Trinity falls to 5-11 and 0-6 in league play.
Tufts controlled play the entire game using tough defense and hard work on the boards to frustrate the Bantams. The Jumbos outrebounded Trinity 49-30, led by freshman Jessica Powers (Massapequa, NY) with 12. They also held the Bantams to 26 percent shooting from the field (14/53).
Junior Maritsa Christoudias (Saddle River, NJ) scored 12 points with four steals for Tufts. Trinity was led by sophomore Michelle McCaffrey, who chipped in 13 points and six rebounds. Freshman Jennifer Gargiulo added 11 points and six rebounds for Trinity.
With the victory, Tufts is in a three-way tie for fourth place in NESCAC at 3-2. After Tuesday's home game versus Lasell, the Jumbos have league games at first place Bowdoin and at second place Colby next weekend.
