CAMBRIDGE -- The 2002-03 Tufts University Women's Basketball season opened with a 61-49 loss to Rensselaer in the first round of the MIT Tip-Off Classic on Friday night. It spoiled the coaching debut of Tufts head coach Carla Berube.
Tufts will now face Emerson College, a 55-40 loser to the host Engineers in the tournament's first game, in the consolation game on Saturday at 1 pm.
RPI's Kristin Kaczynski (Pleasant Valley, CT) scored 29 points on 11 of 18 shooting from the floor. Rensselaer broke a 14-14 first half tie and then never lost the lead. The Engineers held a 13 rebound advantage with center
Jo Alexander (Waterford, CT) grabbing 14 caroms.
Tufts was led by Kate Gluckman's (Morrisville, VT) 10 points. Sophomore forward Allison Love (Duxbury, MA) added seven points and five rebounds. The Jumbos shot just three of 14 from the foul line (21.4 percent). Freshman Jessica Powers (Massapequa, NY) had nine points in her collegiate debut.
