MEDFORD – Senior captain Hillary Dunn (Medfield, MA) finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and eight assists as the Tufts women's basketball team wiped out Lasell College, 80-37, in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Cousens Gym.
Tufts, ranked ninth in today's New England poll, improved to 15-3 with the win. That matches the program's best victory total of the last 12 years. The Jumbos, who finished their non-conference home schedule with a 7-0 record, were led by 19 points from freshman guard Jessica Powers (Massapequa, NY). Lasell, which shot just 29.1 percent (16/55) and fell to 6-11 overall, received 13 points and eight rebounds from junior Keri Tucker (Mexico, ME).
Tufts did not trail in the game after Dunn opened with a three-pointer 13 seconds in. Lasell missed its first 16 shots before sophomore Stacy George (El Paso, TX) converted a short jumper at 9:33 of the first half. Tufts led 19-5 at that point, twice opened up a 21-point margin, and had a 36-18 advantage at the break. After missing the first 16, Lasell finished the half 7 for 12. Powers had 13 points at halftime for the Jumbos, while Tucker had seven for the Lasers.
Lasell was only able to get within 16 points, 45-29, on a Tucker lay-up at 14:21 of the second half. The Jumbos then ran off a 20-5 stretch to lead by 32, 65-33, on another three by Dunn at the 8:25 mark. The 43-point final margin was the highest of the game.
Freshman Julia Verplank (Zeeland, MI) had 12 points and six steals for Tufts, while Powers also had six swipes. Tufts had 19 steals overall and 21 assists on 29 baskets. Sophomore Erin Connolly (Syosset, NY) finished with 13 points. Freshman Theresa Allen (South Boston, MA) had 10 points and five rebounds for the Lasers.
