PROVIDENCE -- Junior guard Maritsa Christoudias (Saddle River, NJ) scored 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds as Tufts defeated Johnson & Wales, 72-41, in women's college basketball action on Wednesday night. The victory was the eighth in a row for the Jumbos, matching the team record set previously by the 1990-91 and 1985-86 Jumbos.
The Jumbos (8-1) forced the Wildcats into 40 turnovers and 28.6 percent shooting. They led 32-16 at the half and went on to post their third win by more than 30 points this season. JWU fell to 4-7 overall. Freshman center Erin Gafford paced the Wildcats with 12 points. She had scored just 10 points in the team's first 10 games of the season.
Freshman Jessica Powers (Massapequa, NY) was the only other Jumbo in double figures with 10 points. All 11 players scored, including eight points and seven rebounds from junior center Erin Buckley (East Sandwich, MA).
Tufts looks to set a new team record for consecutive wins when they host Connecticut College in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opener on Friday night at 7 pm.
