CAMBRIDGE -- Junior center Erin Buckley's (East Sandwich, MA) 11 points and 11 rebounds led the way as the Tufts University women's basketball team routed Emerson College, 67-20, in the consolation game of the MIT Tip-Off Classic on Saturday afternoon. It was the first win of the season for the Jumbos, and the first in the coaching career of new Tufts Head Coach Carla Berube.
Tufts built a 36-13 halftime lead, scoring 13 points at the free throw line in the first 20 minutes. Then in the second half the Jumbo defense allowed just seven points. The 20 points total points allowed were the fewest by a Tufts team since an 87-17 victory over Regis College by the 1980-81 Jumbos. This year's group held Emerson to 17.9 shooting (7/39) and forced 35 turnovers.
Tufts had all 12 players play double-digit minutes. Sophomore Krissy Nierenberg (Lebanon, NH) had eight points and eight rebounds, while freshman Julia Verplank (Zeeland, MI) did a little bit of everything with eight points, three rebounds, two assists and four steals. Buckley was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 8.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in the two games.
After this first taste of action, Tufts is now off until playing at Babson a week from Tuesday on December 3.
