BOSTON -- Members of the Tufts University men's cross country
team ran in two races at the 20th Annual Mayor's Cup, sponsored by
the Boston Athletic Association on Sunday at Franklin Park.
In an open field, the Jumbos ran in the co-ed five-kilometer race on
Sunday. They finished as the men's runner-up out of 20 teams. Senior Matt Tirrell
(Burlington, MA) was sixth out of 350 runners in the 5K with a
16:47 finish. Classmates Jason Hanrahan (Westport, CT) and
Billy Hale (Menlo Park, CA) were also in the top 15 at 17:17
(12th) and 17:30 (14th), respectively. Freshman Drew Fuchs
(Brimfield, MA) was 20th in a 17:40 time. The fifth Tufts scorer
was sophomore Jeff Prescott (Wilton, CT), who was 44th in
18:25.
The Jumbos also ran as a team in the
eight-kilometer men's championship, which was also an open field. Tufts and Dartmouth were the
only two colleges in the 11-team field. Tufts finished 11th.
Freshman Andrew Haskell (Westborough, MA) was the top
Tufts finisher in the race. He was 98th, covering the 8K course in
27:42. Jumbo classmate Sam Haney (Essex, CT) was close behind
in a 27:43 time for 100th place. Freshman Luke Maher (Patterson,
NY) crossed the finish line 104th (27:54). The final two Tufts
scorers were junior Corey Melnick (Waltham, VT) and freshman
Adam Brosh (Agoura Hills, CA), whose times were 28:18 and
28:53, respectively.
The championship season begins for Coach Ethan Barron's team next
Sunday when Trinity College hosts the New England Small College
Athletic Conference race.
