Jesse Faller started his senior season with a 12th place at Trinity

MANCHESTER, Conn. -- Led by senior two-time All-American Jesse Faller (Burlington, MA), the Tufts University men's cross country team opened its 2009 season by placing fourth out of nine teams at the annual Trinity College Invitational. The Jumbos scored 100 points, just behind third-place American International College (93). Stonehill College won the race by a landslide with a score of 33.

Faller, who was 35th at the NCAA race last fall and 18th as a sophomore in 2007, was the top Tufts finisher at Trinity on Saturday, covering the five-kilometer course in 16:44 for 12th place overall.

Tufts had all five of its scorers finish among the top 26 in the 86-man race. Senior Nick Welch (Seattle, WA) was three seconds behind Grannan in a 16:47 time that was good for 16th place overall. Senior Ryan Lena (Orono, ME) crossed the finish line in 21st place (16:56) and freshman Matt Rand (Cape Elizabeth, ME) made his collegiate debut with a 17:02 time for 25th place. Junior Jeff Ragazzini (Wilton, CT) was the fifth Tufts scorer in 26th place overall at 17:03.

AIC's Glarius Rop won the race by 25 seconds with a 15:35 time.
