Nick Welch had one of two top 10 finishes for Tufts at the NESCAC race

NEW GLOUCESTER, Me. -- Tufts University junior Jesse Faller (Burlington, MA) was edged out of second place by one second at the 2008 NESCAC Men's Cross Country Championship, competed on Saturday at Pineland Farms and hosted by Bates College.

Hamilton College's Peter Kosgei won his second straight men's NESCAC championship, covering the 8-kilometer course at Bates' home course in 25:07, a new course record. He was 35 seconds ahead of runner-up Edgar Kosgey of Williams. Kosgey, who nipped Faller as first runner-up, 25:42 to 25:43, led his Ephs to their third consecutive team title, as Williams placed all of its top five runners among the top 17 in the race, scoring 44 points as a team.

The Jumbos finished with two runners in the top 10, as junior co-captain Nick Welch (Seattle, WA) was seventh with a 26:07 time. He was also narrowly defeated for a higher finish, with Connecticut College's Brian Murtagh taking sixth place in 26:05. The two Tufts runners led the Jumbos to a fourth-place team finish with 129 points. In a somewhat ironic twist of fairness, the Jumbo team finished one point in front of fifth-place Connecticut College (130).

Tufts also had a top 20 performer in junior Ryan Lena (Orono, ME), who crossed the finish line with a 26:27 time for 19th place. The fourth Tufts scorer was sophomore Jerzy Eisenberg-Guyot (Brookline, MA), who ran 51st and scored 47th with a 27:17 finish. Completing the scoring for the Jumbos in 58th place (scoring 53rd) was sophomore Jeff Ragazzini (Wilton, CT) in a 27:26 time.

The seven-man Tufts team also included sophomores Chris Brunnquell (Harrington Park, NJ) and Andrew Bellet (Wynnewood, PA), who recorded times of 27:36 and 27:53 respectively.

The Jumbos travel to the ECAC Championship race in Bristol, Rhode Island next week.
