GRAFTON -- The Tufts men's cross country team split its squad to run in two races at the annual Jumbo Invitational on Saturday at the Farm Course on the campus of the Tufts Veterinary School. The Jumbos won the three-team 5K race and finished seventh out of 10 teams in the 8K race.

Jumbo junior Nick Welch (Seattle, WA) won the five-kilometer run in 16:44.58, crossing the finish line 25 seconds before anyone else. Tufts took the top five spots overall for a perfect team score of 15. Bates College was second (50) and Anna Maria College was third (80) in a race that included 28 runners. Junior Ryan Lena (Orono, ME) was the runner-up with a 17:09.69 time. In third place with a 17:13.27 finish was sophomore Jeff Ragazzini (Wilton, CT). In fourth among this lead pack was sophomore Chris Brunnquell (Harrison Park, NJ) at 17:20.46. Freshman Henry Frey (Providence, RI) was all alone in fifth place for Tufts (17:56.64).

In the 8K race, senior co-captain Dave Tilton (Newmarket, NH) was the top Jumbo with a 28:39.83 time for 22nd place. Senior Andrew Lee (Vancouver, WA) was second for Tufts and 48th overall in 30:48.29. He was followed closely by sophomore Andrew Bellet (Wynnewood, PA) in 50th place at 30:52.52. Running fourth for Tufts (59th overall) was sophomore Sam Hutchinson (Cumberland, ME) with a time of 31:38.66 and sophomore Anthony Pelittieri (Webster, NY) scored fifth for Tufts in 31:49.89 (62nd overall).

Bowdoin College of the NESCAC won the 8K competition with a 38 score. Stonehill was second (49) and Bates was third (58). The Tufts score was 194. Augsburg College's Brent Haglund was the individual medalist in 26:42.76, winning by a margin of nearly 28 seconds.
