SPRINGFIELD -- The Tufts University men's team had a good performance at the 2006 NCAA Division III Qualifier hosted by Springfield College, placing fifth out of 45 teams. However, they will have to wait to see if it is good enough to earn them an at-large berth into the NCAA National Championship Race next week. It appears to be a long shot.

The Jumbos were led on Saturday by senior Justin Chung (Manchester, CT), eighth individually with a time of 25 minutes, 58.1 seconds over the eight-kilometer course. That led three Jumbos who finished in the top 35 and could be good enough to qualify for Nationals individually if Tufts does not get in as a team.

Senior co-captain Josh Kennedy (Guilford, CT) was 26th with a 26:27.5 finish, followed in 35th place by freshman Nick Welch (Seattle, WA) with a 26:35.5 time. Also scoring for the Jumbos was junior Dave Sorensen (Dover, MA) in 45th place (26:50.7) and freshman Jesse Faller (Burlington, MA) in 66th place (27:17.3).

Also running for the Jumbos at the regional championship were senior Chad Uy (Syosset, NY), who crossed the finish line in 27:38 flat (83rd) and freshman Peter Browne (Tacoma, WA) 28:25.4 (123rd).

Williams College finished with a team total of 57 points to win the title as three different Ephs crossed the finish line within the top seven. Stephen Wills finished second overall for Williams with a time of 25:48.1, as Brendan Christian was right behind him for the Ephs in third place at 25:48.8. Williams' Mike Davitian finished seventh overall out of 309 total runners with a time of 25:56.2.

Trinity College's Hunter Norte finished first individually for the men, completing the 8k course in a time of 25:37.9, good for a pace of 5:10. Bowdoin's Archie Abrams and Middlebury's James Butcher rounded out the top five men's individual finishers, completing the course in times of 25:50.0 and 25:52.8, respectively.
