GRAFTON -- The Tufts University men's cross-country team opened its 2002 season with a solid showing at its own Hayseed Classic at Grafton, Mass., this past weekend. The Jumbos finished a close second to winner Bentley College at the event, which was held Sept. 7.
Tufts finished second overall with a score of 41 points, 13 behind Bentley. Pacing the Jumbos was sophomore Nate Brigham (Penacook, NH), who placed third overall with a time of 27:25.5 in the 8,000 meter race. Junior Jonathan Rosen (Amherst, MA) placed eighth (27:47.6), freshman Neil Orfield (Burnsville, MN) placed ninth (27:48.8), and freshman Matthew Lacey (Amherst, MA) placed tenth (27:55.9) to lead the squad. Freshman Michael Cummings (Cheshire, CT) finished a close 11th (28:09.8) to round out the Jumbos' top five. Nine of the race's top nineteen finishers were wearing Tufts' Brown and Blue, as well as 13 of the top 30.
The Jumbos will look to improve on their second-place finish this weekend as they travel to Hanover, New Hampshire to compete in the Dartmouth Invitational (Sept. 14).
