ETHAN BARRON SELECTED USTFCCA INDOOR COACH OF THE
YEAR
MEDFORD -- Establishing himself as one of the best
young track & field coaches in the country, Tufts University men's
coach Ethan Barron was named Indoor Coach of the Year by the
United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA)
for the second straight season. The award was announced on March 12,
prior to the start of the NCAA Championship meet.
This winter, Barron had three male athletes qualify
for the NCAA Championships. Senior Dan Marcy (Middletown, NY)
was the national runner-up in the triple jump. Barron guided the
Jumbos to the New England Division III indoor title, the first for
Tufts since 1991. Now in his third season as coach of the Jumbos,
including one year as the interim coach, Barron is the recipient of
this honor for the second consecutive indoor season.
Barron has received six total Coach of the Year
awards in his young career. As cross country and track & field coach
at Tufts, he has three USTFCCCA regional honors and three from the
New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). Last spring
(2007), he was voted USTFCCA New England Outdoor Coach of the Year
and NESCAC Coach of the Year. He swept the USTFCCCA track & field
honors last year, as he was also named New England Region Indoor
Coach of the Year in March 2007. During the 2005-06 season as an
interim coach, Barron was NESCAC Co-Coach of the Year in Cross
Country and the NESCAC Track & Field Coach of the Year for the first
time.
A 2001 graduate of Middlebury College, where he was
an All-American hurdler and an Academic All-American, Barron was an
assistant coach under former Jumbo leader Connie Putnam, Barron was
promoted to interim head coach following Putnam's retirement in
August 2005. The interim tag was then removed when he was promoted
to full-time head coach in June 2006. In addition to this winter's
New England Div. III title, he coached Tufts to a tie for first
place at last spring's NESCAC Outdoor Championships.
