MEDFORD -- The Tufts University men's tennis team
lost 8-1 at #18 Amherst College on Sunday afternoon. The loss
snapped a two-game winning streak for the Jumbos (8-6), but they
lost their fourth conference tilt in a row. The Lord Jeffs improved
to 9-8 overall and 3-4 in the league.
Amherst rolled through doubles play, winning all
three matches. The #3 pairing of Jeff Wan and Mike Mintz didn't lose
a game in an 8-0 win.
Into singles play, Amherst only needed to win twice
to clinch the match. They took five out of six overall. The lone
Tufts win came at #3 where sophomore Andrew Rosen (Armonk, NY)
won a third-set super tie-breaker 10-6 after the team score had
been decided. Rosen had lost the first set to Jeff Wan 6-3 and won
the second 6-4. Three singles matches went to a third set overall.
Amherst's Moritz Koenig lost to Tufts sophomore Bryan Wilner
(Miami, OH) 6-2 in the first set, but rallied to win 6-3 and 6-1
in the #5 match. Jumbo freshman Tony Carucci (Thousand
Oaks, CA) and Sean Doeffler also went to a third-set super
tie-breaker on the fourth singles court with the Lord Jeff winning
4-6, 6-4, 11-9.
Tufts plays at #4 Williams College on Tuesday
afternoon. Amherst College is idle this week and awaits its seeding
in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament.
