Junior Vinh Tran had a quick win at sixth singles for the Jumbos

MEDFORD -- The Tufts University men's tennis team played host to non-conference opponent Springfield College on Wednesday afternoon and came away with a 7-2 victory. The win is the second straight for the Jumbos, who improve to 8-5 overall. Springfield, 6-5, lost for the first time in five matches.

Without a couple starters who are recovering from injuries, Tufts had to improvise on the doubles line-up and fell a bit short. They trailed 2-1 after the doubles round. That is, however, familiar grounds for the Jumbos' strong singles line-up this spring, and Tufts swept the singles all in straight sets to take the victory.

In doubles, senior Will Fleder (New York, NY), playing in his last home match, paired up with freshman Paul Kohnstamm (Larchmont, NY) to win easily 8-1, also serving as a great birthday present for Kohnstamm. In singles, Fleder was the first to finish his match, as he played sparkling tennis at #1 to win 6-0, 6-2 in about 50 minutes. Junior Vinh Tran (Shrewsbury, MA) also finished quickly with a 6-1, 6-0 win at the other end of the order.

Sophomore Daniel Landers (Sao Paulo, Brazil) gave up just two games while winning 6-1, 6-1 in the #5 match and freshman Tony Carucci (Thousand Oaks, CA) allowed just three games to his opponent, scoring a 6-2, 6-1 win in the fourth match.

The Springfield College doubles wins were recorded by Joe Lisi and Andrew Constant at #2 (8-3), and by Bobby Schlink and Tim Tunis at #3 (9-7).

Tufts will finish its regular-season with matches at #14 Amherst on Sunday and at #9 Williams next Tuesday.
