POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Down 2-1 after doubles, the
Tufts University men's tennis team won four out of six matches in
singles play to earn a 5-4 match victory on Saturday afternoon at
Vassar College. The victory ended a string of three straight losses
for the Jumbos, who improved to 7-5 overall. Vassar, which had won
four in a row, is now 12-4.
The only Jumbo doubles pair to win was at #2, where
senior captain Will Fleder (New York, NY) and freshman
Paul Kohnstamm (Larchmont, NY) took an 8-5 final. Vassar won the
#1 and #3 matches.
Into singles, the match played very tightly, as four
singles competitions went to three sets. Sophomore Andrew Rosen
(Armonk, NY) battled back after losing the first set 7-5 to win
6-3 and 6-4 in the #3 match. Freshman Tony Carucci (Thousand
Oaks, CA) did virtually the same thing at #4, losing 7-5 before
winning the match 6-3 and 6-3. Vassar's Max Willner at #2 and Josh
Jasso at #6 also won in three sets.
Sophomore Daniel Landers (Sao Paulo, Brazil)
and Fleder both won handily in singles for the Jumbos, 6-3 and 6-1
at #5 and 7-5, 6-0 at #1, respectively.
The Jumbos host Springfield College on Wednesday
(Apr. 16) in their final home match of the season.
