ORLANDO -- In sunny Orlando on Wednesday, Tufts
faced off against Stevens Institute of Technology and came away with
an 8-1 victory. The win came in the first match of the team's spring
break trip.
For the first time this spring, the Jumbos swept the
doubles with two new pairings at #1 and #3 doubles. Senior captain
Will Fleder (New York, NY) and freshman Paul Kohnstamm
(Larchmont, NY) - playing in his first varsity match - played
strong at the net to dominate 8-2. At #3 doubles, freshman Tom
Wilmanski (Warsaw, Poland) played aggressively at the net behind
Daniel Landers' (Sao Paulo, Brazil) big serve and return
game.
In the singles, Tufts swept except at #1 where
Fleder struggled to get grooved, in part due to equipment failure as
he broke four racquet strings and had to adjust with a new frame. At
#2 freshman Jake Fountain (Nassau, Bahamas) continued to
cruise with an undefeated dual match record of 6-0. The #5 and #6
singles marked the debut of Landers and Wilmanski in singles, with
both winning in two sets.
Tufts improved to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the spring.
The Jumbos play Hamilton College in Miami on Friday. Stevens is now
3-5.
