MEDFORD -- The Tufts men's tennis team, ranked #21
nationally, picked up its first victory of the spring season on
Saturday in the Gantcher Center with a 6-3 score over cross-town
rival MIT. A shake-up in the doubles line-up finally produced a win
at #3 doubles with Daniel Landers (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and
Tom Wilmanski (Warsaw, Poland) getting the win 8-1 with
aggressive power. The Jumbos then dominated singles, taking five out
of six. They are 3-2 overall.
In singles, sophomore Bryan Wilner (Miami, FL)
won the clincher at #5. Toughest matches were at #1 and #3 as Tufts
senior captain Will Fleder (New York, NY) had a second
three-set match in two days, but this time he pulled it out with
aggressive service returns. At #3, freshman Tony Carucci
(Thousand Oaks, CA) had a three-hour battle before finally
succumbing to cramps and his opponent in the third set tie-break.
Coach Doug Eng takes Tufts on spring break next
week. They will play Stevens Tech on Wednesday (Mar. 19) in Orlando
and Hamilton College in Miami on Friday (Mar. 21). MIT falls to 6-3
overall.
