WALTHAM -- The Jumbos visited local non-conference rival
Brandeis University on Friday night and came away with a 5-4 loss,
their second consecutive close defeat.
Like against Colby last Saturday,
the Jumbos came out slow in the doubles. Brandeis's hustle and
aggressive play won
all three doubles, which again placed the Jumbos in a major hole for
the second straight
match.
With only three indoor courts, the 1-3 singles matches went on next.
Tufts freshman Jake Fountain (Nassau, Bahamas) won
convincingly at #3 for Tufts, but classmate Tony Carucci
(Thousand Oaks, CA) lost a very tight, two-hour battle at
#2 to make the overall team score 4-1 in favor of the Judges. In the #1
match, Jumbo senior captain Will Fleder (New York, NY) got
adjusted to his opponent's heavy southpaw serve and came back to
dominate the second set 6-1 after dropping the first in a
tie-breaker. In the third set Fleder had five match points, but his opponent staved off defeat to pull out a dramatic 9-7 win in the
third set tie-break. That put the match out of reach at 5-1.
Tufts swept the remaining singles matches, with sophomore
Andrew Rosen (Armonk, NY) at #4, sophomore Bryan Wilner
(Miami, FL) at #5 and sophomore Jon Trott (Milton, MA)
all surrendering five points or less in their matches.
At 0-2 for the spring, Tufts is 2-2 overall in 2007-08. They get
right back at it with a home match against MIT indoors at the
Gantcher Center on Saturday. Brandeis, which improved to 3-2, plays
at Bates on Saturday at 4:00 pm.
