MEDFORD -- In the first match of the spring season for both
teams, Colby College earned a 5-4 victory over Tufts University in a
match played indoors at the Gantcher Center because of rain on
Saturday.
Tufts was looking to avenge upset losses in the last two years
to Colby, but this year proved to be no different. It didn't
help that at the last moment, the Jumbos had to pull sophomore
Jon Trott (Milton, MA) due to illness from the doubles
and singles. That loss to the #21 Tufts line-up ended up a big
factor in the team's close defeat. In doubles, Colby showed
their typical aggressive play as one of the best NESCAC doubles
teams, while errors and conservative play hurt the Jumbos. Colby
swept the three matches like last year, despite a last-minute
substitution and heroics at third doubles by Tufts freshman
Tom Wilmanski (Warsaw, Poland) pairing up with sophomore
Bryan Wilner (Miami, FL) to make a very tight run.
With Tufts down 3-0 after doubles, the first four singles
matches were played on the Gantcher Courts, with the #5 and 6
matches following later. Tufts' superior baseline play showed as the Jumbos
dominated #1, #3, and #4 singles easily. That made the match
3-3. Colby's serve-and-volleys only paid off at #2 as Zack
Schuman squeaked by in a tight long match against freshman
Tony Carucci (Thousand Oaks, CA). Wilner also added to the
Tufts score by winning easily at #5.
Only junior #6 Vinh Tran
(Shrewsbury, MA), who substituted for Trott, was left to
decide the match. In a match contrasting a
serve-and-volley style by Colby's Michael Jonsen against Tran's
baseline counter-punching style, both players scrambled hard
despite inconsistent play. In the end, Colby's Jonsen proved to
be tougher to win in the third set.
The loss is the first of the year for Tufts (2-1), which won
two dual matches in the fall.
