BRUNSWICK, Me. -- The Bowdoin
College men's soccer team used a pair of goals 86 seconds apart in
the second half to take an eventual 2-1 win over Tufts University on
Friday afternoon. With the win, the Polar Bears (10-3-1, 5-3-1) net
the fourth seed for the upcoming NESCAC Tournament and will host
Trinity College in an opening-round match on Sunday at 12:30. Tufts
ends their season with a record of 2-10-2 (0-8-1 NESCAC).
The game entered halftime scoreless, thanks in great part to the
efforts of Tufts junior defender Alex Hart (San Francisco, CA).
Bowdoin had a tremendous chance to break into the scoring column
just minutes into the game, when a gaffe by Jumbo netminder Pat
Tonelli (Andover, MA) resulted in the ball trickling toward the
end line, where Hart stole a goal away from Bowdoin's Michael Gale
with a diving kick. Hart made another stop of a ball headed towards
an open goal in the second half, to keep the game scoreless.
Bowdoin finally broke through with a perfectly-placed cross from
Carl Woock to the toe of Peter Kelley, who netted it in the top-left
corner at 60:19. Just moments later, Woock earned another assist
with another well-placed cross, this time to the foot of Nick
Powell, who gave the Polar Bears a two-goal lead at 61:45.
Tufts junior Chris Flaherty (Duxbury, MA) scored a late goal
on a laser with 3:20 remaining to trim the lead to a single goal.
But Bowdoin maintained possession for the rest of the contest,
sealing the win. Dan Hicks made
five saves for Bowdoin before giving way to Garrick Sheldon, who was
not challenged. Tonelli stopped four shots for Tufts in 48:20 while
sophomore Alan Bernstein (Wayne, NJ) made two saves and
allowed both goals in his 41:40 of action.
