MEDFORD -- Visiting Connecticut College scored a goal in each
half to take a 2-0 victory at Tufts University in a NESCAC men's
soccer match played under the lights on a pleasant Tuesday evening
at Bello Field.
The win stops a two-game losing streak in league play for the
Camels, who improved to 7-3-1 overall and 4-3 in NESCAC. Tufts
remains winless in the league at 0-6-1 while dropping to 2-8-2
overall.
The host Jumbos had three early corner kicks from which they
couldn't generate a quality scoring chance. At the other end, Tufts
goalkeeper Pat Tonelli (Andover, MA) - one of five Jumbo
seniors playing in their final home game - made two good plays among
crowds in the goal mouth early on.
The first shot of the game resulted in a goal as Camels junior
Trevor Prophet (Nashua, NH) scored his eighth of the year to tie for
the league lead. Sophomore Oscar Brown (Ridgefield, NJ) sent a
beautiful cross from the right side across the box to Prophet, who
scored at the 27:53 mark.
Tonelli made two saves and a Tufts defender also made a save in
the first half, when CC held a slim 4-3 lead in shots. Corners (four
each) and fouls (seven each) were dead even for the first 45.
Early in the second, a great serve into the box by CC's Jourdan
Perez (Lynbrook, NY) was headed on goal by Prophet, but Tonelli
extended a hand to make the save. The Camels had early second-half
momentum, but the tide turned some when Tufts had solid chances with
shots by freshman Kevin Maxham (Fairfield, CT) and senior
Dan Schoening (Kenmore, WA).
With Tufts down a man after a red card, recently entered Camels
senior Mickey Lenzi (Hauppauge, NY) dropped a pass at the feet of
sophomore Brian Morgan (Harvard, MA), who scored a valuable
insurance goal with seven minutes left in regulation. The goal was
Morgan's first of the season and put the Camels up 2-0.
Connecticut College finished with a 13-7 advantage in shots after
a 9-4 tally in the second half. Corners were 5-5 overall. Tonelli
made five saves in 83 minutes of play, while CC keeper Alex Martland
(Marblehead, MA) had three saves for a shutout. A typically feisty
NESCAC game featured 29 fouls and six cards (five against Tufts).
The Jumbos play at Williams on Saturday at noon. Connecticut
College hosts Colby in NESCAC play that day at 2 pm.
