MEDFORD – Tufts University safety and aspiring doctor Patrick Magoon (South Easton, MA/Oliver Ames) was rewarded for his efforts on the field and in class this season when he was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District football team that was announced today.
One of 24 players in the region named to the team, Magoon is one of just five New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) players on the squad. The team consists of players from all of the Division II-III teams in the Northeast.
Solo captain of the 2005 Jumbos, Magoon is enjoying an excellent season in the Jumbo secondary. He is third on the team with 39 tackles (22 solo), including two for losses of nine yards. He has a sack, an interception with a 30-yard return and a forced fumble. He had 10 tackles with the interception last week (Nov. 5) at Colby.
In addition to his fine play, Magoon leads by example with his attention to detail.
"He is a true student of the game," Tufts defensive coordinator John Walsh said. "You tell him something once, he's going to do it. He's really another coach on the field, a kid who is the perfect student in the classroom and a perfect student of football."
Selected to the 2004 NESCAC All-Academic Team, and likely to be honored academically again by the league this fall, Magoon has made Dean's List four out of six semesters at Tufts as Pre-Med student. He anticipates studying at the Tufts University School of Medicine beginning in Fall 2006. A starter at free safety for three seasons, he is the Tufts Football Community Service Coordinator, was the 2003 Tufts Most Valuable Defensive Back and in 2002 was a NESCAC Rookie of the Week selection.
"He's our leader out there," said Coach Bill Samko. "He gets the defense aligned and makes all our checks. He's cerebral, but he's also very physical. Some players have one or the other, or one more than the other. He's got both."
Magoon continues a tradition of Jumbo football players who have been honored as regional All-Academic team members.
