MEDFORD-
Tufts University free safety Patrick
Magoon (South Easton, MA/Oliver Ames) was named New England Small College
Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Rookie of the Week for his outstanding performance
against Colby College this past Saturday (Nov. 2). Magoon had ten tackles (four solo, six assisted) as the
defense turned in a fine effort despite a disappointing 9-0 loss to the Mules.
In his first significant playing time of
the season, he was
filling in for starter Drew Blewett
(Great Falls, MT/Great Falls). Blewett was injured in the Williams game two
weeks ago and is out for the season.
The
Tufts defense was at its best in the second half, as they held the Mules
scoreless. When they did move into Tufts territory, along with a blocked field goal they punted, turned the ball over on downs, fumbled the ball away twice, and took a knee as time expired.
Magoon was a key factor. Six of his ten tackles came in the fourth quarter. Although
perhaps unexpected, his play was one of the bright spots in the game for the
Jumbos, who could not get anything going offensively.
Magoon had only seven tackles in his first six games before exploding
this weekend.
The
Jumbos (3-4) will finish up their season this Saturday (Nov. 9) at Middlebury
College (3-4) with a chance to finish their season at .500 after losing their
last four straight games. Kickoff
will be at 12:30 pm.
