MANCHESTER, Conn. -- The Tufts men's cross country team ran third
at the 2009 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC)
Championship Race on Sunday, finishing just two points out of second
place. The Jumbos were led by senior Jesse Faller (Burlington,
MA), who placed fourth overall.
With four finishers in the top 25, the Jumbos accumulated a score
of 90. Second-place Amherst finished at 88. Williams College easily
won the men's conference title with a score of 40. The third-place
finish is the best for Tufts since 2005.
Running a five-mile course at Wickham Park, Faller finished in a
26:21 time. He was three seconds behind third-place finisher
Josephat Koima from Williams. Faller was third at last year's
NESCAC's and 12th in 2007.
Tufts received outstanding performances from freshmen Kyle
Marks (Carmel, IN) and Matt Rand (Cape Elizabeth, ME) in
the first championship race of their collegiate careers. Marks was
second for Tufts and 16th overall in 27:15, while Rand placed third
for the Jumbos and 18th overall with a 27:20 finish.
Junior Jeff Ragazzini (Wilton, CT) also scored well for
Tufts, racing over the course in 27:26 for 21st place. Senior
Nick Welch (Seattle, WA) was the fifth Tufts finisher and 32nd
overall (27:44). The race included 121 competitors overall.
Coach Ethan Barron's team continues its championship schedule by
racing in the ECAC's next Saturday at Williams.
