MEDFORD -- Thomas College junior guard Andrew Duncanson
(Portland, ME) scored 15 of his game-high 25 points in the second
half as the visiting Terriers pulled away from Tufts University for
an 85-71 victory on Tuesday night at Cousens Gymnasium.
Thomas, which remained undefeated at 4-0, had five scorers finish
in double digits overall. Junior Isaiah Brathwaite (Farmington, ME)
had 12 points and seven rebounds, with 10 of his points coming in
the second half. Freshman Francisco Alicea (Foxborough, MA) also
scored 12.
Tufts was playing its first game in the newly renovated Cousens
Gymnasium. The Jumbos were led by 18 points from senior Dave
Beyel (Ocean City, NJ), while senior tri-captain Jon Pierce
(Belmont, MA) doubled with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman
Scott Anderson (Sudbury, MA) scored 12 for the Jumbos,
Tufts remained winless at 0-3.
The host Jumbos led 36-35 after a very evenly played first half.
The Jumbos got 11 points from Beyel in the first 20 minutes. His
three-pointer and a follow-up three by senior Dan Cook (Dover,
MA) helped Tufts get a 32-27 lead with 3:29 to play in the half.
Into the second half, a three-pointer by Thomas sophomore Antonio
Juco (Winterport, ME) capped an 8-2 run that gave the visitors a
43-38 edge. The Jumbos retook the lead and were up by five, 56-51,
when Anderson drained a jumper with 10:26 on the clock.
After the teams tied for the 12th time of the contest at 59-59
with 7:49 to play, the Terriers went on a 10-0 run that put them in
control. Freshman Jarrad DeVaughn (Brockton, MA) had two lay-ups
during the stretch and Thomas led 69-59 with 4:22 remaining.
Three-pointers by Beyel and freshman Adam Goldfarb (New York, NY),
along with a pair of free throws by Pierce, pulled Tufts within four
(73-69) at 2:17.
The Jumbos then sandwiched two missed shots around a turnover on
their next three possessions while the Terriers hit their free
throws. They would finish the night 22 for 24 on freebies (91.7
percent), including 18 for 19 (94.7 percent) in the second half. A
lay-up by Goldfarb kept Tufts alive, down 77-71 with 56 seconds
remaining. Thomas was solid at the line though to seal the victory.
The Terriers finished the game with 12 steals on 18 Tufts
turnovers, led by three from sophomore Travis Pettus (Roxbury, MA).
Goldfarb added 10 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals
for Tufts.
