Game Box Score

Senior Adam Telian went eight innings and struck out nine Mules

MEDFORD -- The Tufts University baseball team took advantage of 12 walks and poor defense by Colby College on Friday afternoon to post a 14-5 victory over the Mules in the opener of an important NESCAC East Division series at Huskins Field.

The Jumbos, who improved to 15-12 overall and 5-5 in the league, are fighting for the second and final berth from the East Division into the upcoming NESCAC Tournament. Colby (15-12, 2-7 NESCAC East) is also still alive for the playoff spot.

Tufts led the Mules 10-0 through five innings on Friday. They scored five times in the second, including three runs on the first home run of the season by junior RF Eric Catalanotti (Grafton, MA). The Jumbos added a single run in the third on doubles by sophomore 1B Corey Pontes (Milton, MA) and sophomore catcher Alex Perry (Danvers, MA). In the fifth inning, Tufts scored four times without a hit as Colby pitchers walked four in the inning and hit a batter.

Jumbo senior starter Adam Telian (Stoughton, MA) pitched better then his final numbers would indicate, as defensive miscues on a windy day led to all of the Colby runs. In the sixth, Colby junior catcher Kyle McKay (Bedford, MA) hit a grand slam when his fly ball bounced off the glove of the Tufts right fielder and went over the fence. In the seventh, a liner to right by John Lerner (Canton, MA) was misplayed into a triple, and Lerner scored on a base hit by sophomore CF Ken Kaufman (Lexington, MA).

Tufts still had a comfortable lead at 14-5 after scoring four in the bottom of the sixth. Three walks, a wild pitch and a failed pick-off attempt at third by Colby, along with a two-run double to the right-center gap by junior 3B Kevin Casey (Milford, MA), sparked the inning. The Mules finished with five errors overall.

Telian went eight innings allowing nine hits and five runs while striking out nine. Casey finished the game 2 for 5 with 3 RBI, while freshman OF Chase Rose (Scottsdale, AZ) walked three times and was 2 for 3 with 3 runs scored. Freshman SS Dave Leresche (St. Louis, MO) scored three runs without a hit and Catalanotti finished with four RBI for the Jumbos.

Kaufman (2 for 5, 1 run, 1 RBI) and sophomore 2B John LaMantia (Gates Mills, OH) at 2 for 3 with a run were the leaders at the top of the Colby batting order. The Mules got scoreless innings of relief from sophomore Nick Ruocco (Lexington, MA) and senior Jack Peet (Chadds Ford, PA).

The teams play a double-header at Huskins tomorrow beginning at noon.
