Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Who can play?
All enrolled students, faculty and staff members are eligible to participate. Sorry, alumni, spouses, children and friends are not. All sports are coed with the exception of women's basketball. Only one team member from each team may be a present or past varsity athlete in that sport.
  2. When and how often do teams play?
Most team sport teams play once a week. Scheduled days can be found on the sport pages.

  3. What's the Deal with A League and B League? Which do I sign my team up for?Certain sports are delineated into A and B Leagues for more equitable play among teams. A League is the more competitive, and is designed for players who played the sport in high school or its equivalent. B League is for players and teams that are new to the sport, or less experienced. If you are unsure, B league is probably the way to go in almost all circumstances. Also, while a player may be on both an A and B League team in a sport, s/he must be the ONLY A League player on the B League team. In other words, any B League team may have only 1 player competing at the A League level on their roster.
  4. Why the fee?
$30 per team for Flag football and basketball. The fees are to offset costs of equipment and most notably, officials.

  5. What is the story on forfeits?
For any sport, if you forfeit a game your team is removed from the schedule. This is to allow teams on  the waiting list a chance to get on to the schedule, and to ensure that forfeits are minimized to the greatest extent possible. This is also why you are encouraged to have extra players on your team- so that you can still field a team in the event of something coming up.

  6. How many on a roster?
No limit. No person may be on more than one roster in the same league in a given sport. A player that plays in the A (competitive or advanced) league for a particular sport may also play in the B (novice) league in that sport, as long as s/he is the only such player on the B league team. In other words, no team in a B league may have more than one current A league player on their roster. If a sport plays at the same level (A or B) more than one night, a team may play both nights (space available) but the league in which they are eligible for the playoffs will be night with the fewest teams. For example, a team may play B-league soccer on Monday and Wednesday, but will be eligible for a playoff spot only in the night with the fewest teams. This gives them a better chance of advancing, and avoids taking spots from other teams.

  7. Rules?
Please familiarize your team with the rules posted for each sport on the website. If you have rule suggestions/concerns, you can discuss them with the IM director.

  8. Season length?
We aim for a 6 week season for all sports, but this can vary considerably based on gym availability and interest.

  9. What if I want to play, but I don't have a team to play on?
Over the course of several seasons of IM, it has been shown that the most successful way to have fun and enjoy IM is to create a team, or join on with other students that you know. All the sports either have a league designated as novice, or have at least 1/3 of the teams with little to no experience... so don't worry about being non-competitive because all your friends have no experience- it's fun! If you can not find a team or create one, you can try to get on the roster of a team that is looking to pick up players. That said, I can not guarantee that a player can be placed on a team or that captains will be able to fill out their roster with "single" players. Any players looking for a team should request emails of other players in the league well before the roster deadline. In general, there are not enough "singles" looking for teams to make up an entire team. If you need a team, ask around... there are enough people playing on campus that you will certainly run into someone who knows someone who has started a team. Playing IM is for beginners, and takes no experience, just a desire to have fun. Make a team of your friends, ask you RA to put together a hall team, or your favorite professor to put together a department team of students and faculty.
