CAMBRIDGE -- Spurred by a fourth-place finish from
their A Division dinghy, the Tufts University co-ed sailing team
finished seventh at the 66th Erwin Schell Trophy hosted by MIT over
the weekend. Among the opponents at the inter-sectional were
out-of-region teams Charleston, Georgetown, Stanford, and Navy.
The Jumbos finished with a score of 327 after 20
races in each division, just two points behind sixth-place Brown and
six behind fifth-place Vermont. The A Division was fourth among 20
teams with a 126 score. The B Division team was 10th with a 201
score.
Senior Tomas Hornos (Swampscott, MA)
skippered the A boat with three different crews due to the windy
conditions. They were senior Rachael Brill (Scottsdale, AZ)
for races 1-4 and 13-20, freshman Max Bulger (Brookline, MA)
for races 11-12, and senior Nate Rosenberg (St. Thomas, V.I.)
in races 5-10. Hornos and Brill won the 16th race, while Tufts also
had two runner-up placements in A Division.
Likewise in B Division, senior skipper Andrew
Criezis (Evanston, IL) was paired with three crews. Regular
teammate Jen Watkins (Edina, MN) was with him for races 1-2
and 12-20. Bulger worked races 3-10 and Rosenberg jumped in for the
11th race. A second-place effort by Criezis and Bulger was the top
Tufts performance.
Yale won the Schell Trophy for the first time since
1976.
Tufts will sail in the Hap Moore Trophy regatta at
Boston College next weekend.
