KIRKLAND TO COMPETE IN FOURTH SINGLEHANDED NATIONALS
MEDFORD -- Tufts University senior Zander Kirkland (Warwick, Bermuda/Tabor
Academy) placed second in the New England Single-handed Championship held at
the University of Vermont on October 8-9. The
second-place finish qualifies Kirkland for the Intercollegiate Sailing
Association (ICSA) Single-handed Championships in Hawaii on November 18-20, his
fourth appearance in as many years. The
top four finishers in the New England regatta qualify for the national event.
Kirkland performed consistently at the New England championship, notching a top five
finish in all but one of his 14 races, and finishing first in a field of 37
sailors twice. The senior amassed a
total of just 48 points, 15 points behind three-time New England champion Clay
Johnson of Harvard. Tufts senior Brendan
Shattuck (Annapolis, MD/Choate) also fared well for the Jumbos, attaining
seven top-ten finishes for a total of 151 points, good for eighth place overall.
Last season, Kirkland finished third in the ICSA Single-handed Championship, hosted
by the University of Minnesota, with a total of 83 points in 16 races. He was
seventh at the 2003 event hosted by Eckerd College. As a freshman in 2002, he
took fourth place in Houston.
