CO-ED SAILORS WIN OWN HOOD TROPHY

MEDFORD -- The Tufts University Co-ed Sailing team hosted and won the Hood Trophy out of 19 teams on Upper Mystic Lake in Medford September 27-28.

The margin of victory was pretty large for Tufts (61) since both the "A" and "B" boats sailed their way to first place finishes in each individual set of races. Dartmouth finished in a distant second with 104 points, and Brown pulled in third with 115 points.

The "A" boat was captained by senior A.J. Crane (Warwick, BERMUDA) and crewed by senior Kristen Tysell (Richmond, CA). Together Crane and Tysell pulled in four first place finishes out of the ten races. With only one finish below fifth place, consistency allowed the duo to compile the low total of 29 points. In addition to its first place finishes, the "A" boat also had a second in one race, third once, fourth twice, and fifth once. The nearest competitors to the Tufts' "A" boat was Central Florida. The Bulls' "A" boat compiled a score of 47, which illustrates the Jumbos' "A" boat dominance.

Tufts' "B" boat shared similar dominance over the competition by finishing with 32 points, over Dartmouth's "B" boat, who score 45 points. The Jumbos' second squad was captained by sophomore David Siegal (Dartmouth, MA/Tabor Academy) and crewed by senior Katie Shuman (Seattle, WA/Garfield).

In impressive fashion, the "B" boat took home first place in 40% of its races, but on the other hand finished three races below fifth place. The boat's saving grace was its one second place finish and two third place finishes. Outside of race two, six, and eight, the Jumbos' "B" boat showed excellent consistency in its racing.

It's appropriate that the Tufts Sailing team brought home the Hood Trophy because the regatta was truly a team effort. Both boats comfortably finished in first place, boasting the only team score in double-digits.
