TUFTS CO-ED WINS HATCH BROWN REGATTA

MEDFORD - The Tufts University co-ed sailing team proved its excellence once again this past weekend (Sept. 15-16) by winning the Hatch Brown Regatta amongst Greater Boston rivals Brandeis, MIT, and BU. Nationally ranked second, the Jumbos won both the A and B Divisions to dominate the competition by 24 points. Tufts totalled 73 points, far ahead of second place Boston University's 97.

Junior skipper Pete Levesque (Falmouth, ME/ Tabor Academy) and classmate crew Caroline Hall (Tiverton, RI/ Moses Brown) navigated for the A Division boat and ran away with five first-place finishes over the two-day, 13-race event. The duo also posted six top-five finishes. Levesque and Hall tallied a total of 35 points, followed by Boston University with 41 points.

Last year the same duo competed for the national championship and squeaked out a two-point victory over Harvard, each earning All-American mention. Opening their 2001 season Levesque and Hall placed second to Harvard at the Harry Anderson Regatta in early September, predicting a very competitive sailing season.

Senior skipper John Birkett (Boston, MA/ Milton Academy) and sophomore crew Katie Shuman (Seattle, WA/ Garfield) were victorious in the B Division at the Hatch Brown with six first places and seven top-five finishes for a total of 38 points. The University of Washington followed in second with 50 points.

The Jumbos will take the water for another major regatta this weekend (Sept. 22-23) as Tufts hosts the Hood Trophy.
