CO-ED SAILING CAPTURES DANMARK TROPHY
MEDFORD The Tufts University Co-ed Sailing team captured the Danmark Trophy this past weekend (Sept. 29-30), finishing first in a competitive field of eighteen that included Ivy League rivals Harvard, Dartmouth, and Brown. The Jumbos tallied 342 points in the 18-race, three-division regatta, 31 ahead of second-place Boston College. The Danmark Trophy, which was hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, was the nationally ranked Jumbos' third straight regatta championship.
The Jumbos proved once again that consistency and depth lead to victory; Tufts took the regatta without having won any of the three divisions. The team of junior skipper Peter Levesque (Falmouth, ME/Tabor) and junior crew Caroline Hall (Tiverton, RI/Moses Brown) placed fourth overall in the A Division with 129 points. The tandem notched two first-place finishes and eight top-five finishes in the regatta's 18 races. The B-Division team of junior skipper J.R. Maxwell (Stonington, CT/Williams) and classmate crew Deane Madsen (Brookline, MA/Roxbury Latin) finished third in their division with a total of 112 points, only nine points behind first-place Dartmouth. Maxwell and Madsen tallied three first-place finishes and ten top-five finishes. Junior Joel Hanneman (Houston, TX/Tabor) rounded off the team scoring by capturing fourth place in the Singlehanded C Division with 101 points, 13 behind first-place Merchant Marine Academy. Hanneman placed second in three races and finished in the top five in ten of his 18 races.
The Tufts Co-ed squad was ranked first in the nation in the most recent Sailing World College Rankings, dethroning former #1 Harvard (Sept. 25). Five members of the team, including Hanneman, will travel to Yale University this weekend for the Singlehanded Championships (Oct. 6-7).
