MEDFORD -- Junior Luke Heffernan (Arlington, MA/Arlington) of the
Tufts University golf team has earned a spot as one of the top
golfers in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC)
this season. He is on the 2009 All-NESCAC Second Team, announced
today by the conference office.
The 2009 NESCAC Golf All-Conference teams are selected based upon
individual finishes at the championship qualifier, which was held
this past weekend at Waubeeka Golf Links in Williamstown, Mass. A
total of six players made the cut for the First Team while eight
individuals had Second Team recognition bestowed upon them.
Heffernan finished in a three-way tie for 12th individually at
the NESCAC Fall Qualifier, out of 49 total golfers. His one-over par
72 in the first round was the fourth-best round of the entire
tournament. He shot 79 in the second round for a 151 total. He led
Coach Bob Sheldon's Jumbos in both rounds as Tufts finished fifth as
a team, one spot short of qualifying for the conference championship
tournament to be played in the spring.
This is the second straight year a Tufts golfer has been on the
All-Conference team. Last fall, Phil Haslett was on the second team.
Spurred by an even-par 142 performance, Hamilton senior Phil
Preiss was named the 2009 NESCAC Player of the Year. Coach of the
Year honors went to Rick Pohle of Williams. Middlebury freshman
Andrew Emerson was the Rookie of the Year.
