garners All-NESCAC honor
The Tufts University varsity golf program offers competitive
golfers the opportunity to play golf at a high level while receiving
a fine education. Jumbo golfers call Andovers Indian Ridge Country
Club their home, and also practice at Stow Acres Country Club and
Sandy Burr Country Club. Tournament locales include the Ralph Myhre
Golf Course in Middlebury, Vermont, and Taconic Golf Club in
Williamstown.
Bob Sheldon, the 2002 NESCAC Coach of the Year, is entering his 19th
season as head coach of the golf team. Throughout his tenure as the
golf coach, Sheldon has also coached the men's basketball team at
Tufts and has amassed a 299-200 record as the all-time winningest
coach.
Sheldon is a 1977 graduate of St. Lawrence University, where he
played basketball, and he received a Masters in Educational
Administration from Fordham University in 1982.
The Jumbos compete in the New England Small College Athletic
Conference (NESCAC). Starting in 2007, the 10 representative teams
compete in a conference qualifier in late September, in which the
top four finishing teams earn positions in the NESCAC Championship
held in April of the same academic year. In the formats inaugural
season, the Jumbos narrowly missed out on the Championship,
finishing in fifth place and a mere seven strokes behind 4th place
finisher Williams College.
The Jumbos fall season concludes at the New England Intercollegiate
Golf Association (NEIGA) Championships, Americas largest collegiate
golfing tournament. The New Englands, as the tournament is often
referred to, feature the top golf teams from Division I, II, and III
schools across the area, and are always held at the Captains Golf
Course in Brewster.
While predominantly a fall sport, the Tufts golf schedule also
features a host of one- and two-day tournaments in the spring,
concluding the season in late April.
Tufts University is recognized as one of the nation's finest
institutions. Its location just outside of Boston allows its
students to enjoy life in one of America's most beautiful cities
while living on Tufts' renowned Medford-Somerville campus. Students
at Tufts are instructed by some of the nation's most talented
educators in areas such as international relations, engineering,
English, economics, and countless others.
Along with the enriching experience of a Tufts education, Jumbo
golfers enjoy the opportunity to play competitive athletics as a
supplement to classroom experience. Tufts golfers play many of New
England's finest courses throughout the year, and the team
environment college golf provides is a beneficial asset for the
future.
