MEDFORD -- After starting slow, the seventh-ranked Tufts University
women's lacrosse team pulled away from Gordon College and earned a 19-10
victory in non-league play at Bello Field on Tuesday afternoon.
First-year Kelly Hyland (Acton, MA) led Tufts with five goals off
the bench.
The Jumbos won their fourth in a row and improved to 8-1 overall (3-0
in non-conference play). They also received four goals from junior
Jenna Abelli (Framingham, MA) and three by senior Maya Shoham
(West Hartford, CT). Gordon, which lost its second straight game to
fall to 3-5, was led by four goals from senior Danielle Zorn (Mercer
Island, WA) and two goals with five assists for a game-high seven
points by senior Annie Cameron (South Hamilton, MA).
The Fighting Scots were upset-minded in the first five minutes,
taking a 3-2 lead on two early goals by Zorn and another by Cameron.
However, Abelli scored the next two goals on free-position shots and the
Jumbos would never trail again. That was part of a seven-goal Tufts
spurt that was finished off by two Courtney Thomas (Needham, MA)
goals for a 9-3 lead with 9:23 remaining in the first half. Hyland
scored three times in the final four minutes of the half and the Jumbos
led 14-5 at intermission.
Gordon goals by junior Katie Knaus (Kensington, CT) and Zorn
early in the second half cut the margin to 15-7. However, Abelli, Hyland
and Shoham scored for Tufts to get the score to 18-8 at 21:37 and the
game was played under running time for the next 16 minutes. The Jumbos
played keep-away for most of the final 10 minutes. Gordon's Cameron and
senior Kylie Hardin (Broomall, PA) scored the last two goals of
the game for the 19-10 final.
First-year Lara Kozin (Suffern, NY) added a goal and four
assists to the Tufts attack. The Jumbos finished five for six on
free-position opportunities and did not allow any free-position chances
to Gordon. Abelli converted three alone for the Jumbos. Tufts had a
38-22 advantage in total shots and 43-29 in ground balls. First-year
Stephanie Perez (East Providence, RI) led the way with six ground
balls and Abelli corralled four draw controls. Sophomore Sara Bloom
(Summit, NJ) started in goal and made four saves, while first-year
Alexis Germain (Saint Johns, FL) came on for the final 39 minutes
and stopped three shots.
Senior Chyanne Wilson (Pearl River, NY) was often sharp in
goal with 13 saves for the Fighting Scots, including nine in the first
half. Knaus tallied three goals, an assist, nine ground balls and six
draw controls in a strong effort for the visitors.
Tufts continues its non-league schedule at Wheaton College on
Thursday. Gordon is at Bates College on Thursday.
