MEDFORD -- First-year Margie Fulton (Wellesley, MA)
came off the bench to score five goals with an assist, and junior
Tina Nawrocki (Winchester, UK) added four goals and two assists, as
the unranked Williams College women's lacrosse team defeated #7 Tufts
University, 15-13, in a very competitive NESCAC game on Bello Field
Saturday afternoon.
The visiting Ephs scored on six of 10 free-position
opportunities and got 13 saves from sophomore goalie Julia Schreiber
(Cockeysville, MD) while improving to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in NESCAC.
Sophomore Amanda Roberts (Wenham, MA) scored five goals to lead
Tufts, which lost for the first time this season (4-1, 2-1 NESCAC).
The Jumbos had a 4-1 lead halfway into the first period,
with junior Emily Johnson (Yarmouth, ME) scoring twice. The Ephs
scored three of the next four goals, including Nawrocki's second of the
game at 5:40 to make it 5-4 Tufts. An unassisted tally by senior
Courtney Thomas (Needham, MA) got one back for the Jumbos, but
Williams finished with four straight goals to end the half leading 8-6.
Three of the goals came with Tufts starting goalkeeper Sara Bloom
(Summit, NJ) off the field due to a yellow card. Fulton
scored twice during the Williams run.
Tufts battled back by out-scoring Williams 5-2 in the
first 16 minutes of the second half. Roberts scored twice during this
span and gave Tufts a 10-9 lead at 17:58. Senior tri-captain Britt
Spackman (Newton, MA) tied it at 10 for Williams, but first-year
Maggie Casey (Wayne, PA) put Tufts back on top with an unassisted
goal at 14:07. That's when Williams took control of the game, scoring
four straight in a five-minute span. Nawrocki scored the first two of
the stretch and added an assist, helping the visitors take a 14-11
advantage at the 8:46 mark. Roberts scored her fifth at 5:35 to pull the
Jumbos within two (14-12), but that's as close as they would get. Tufts
played most of the final 3:30 short-handed due to yellow cards.
Junior Whitney Thayer (Lancaster, PA) finished
with three goals and two assists for Williams, which also got two goals
and three assists from Spackman. Nawrocki controlled five draws and
caused three turnovers for the Ephs, while senior tri-captain Lizzie
Burns (Dover, DE) led them with five ground balls.
Johnson had three goals for Tufts and Thomas finished
with two. Junior Alyssa Kopp (Hollis, NH) had a game-highs with
six draw controls and seven ground balls. Roberts also caused three
turnovers. Bloom finished with three saves in 55:41 of play.
Tufts is off all week until playing at Wesleyan next
Saturday (Mar. 28). The same is true for Williams, which next hosts
Trinity on Saturday.
