WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Junior Jenna Abelli
(Framingham, MA) scored four of her game-high five goals in the
first half, and the Tufts women's lacrosse team scored 11 times in the
second half, as the Jumbos posted a 19-11 victory over Babson College
Tuesday on spring break in Florida.
The victory was the second in four days over a team
ranked in the top 10 of the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches
Association national poll by the #13 Jumbos. Babson is ranked #9 and
Colby, whom Tufts defeated 13-9 on Saturday, is at #8. The Jumbos
improved to 4-0 overall and Babson dropped to 2-2.
Tufts scored the first two goals, by seniors Courtney
Thomas (Needham, MA) and Maya Shoham (West Hartford, CT),
and never trailed in the game. Babson rallied to tie at 3-3 and 4-4
on goals by Jess Parker and Anna Collins, respectively. However, Tufts
scored the next three, with two assists from senior co-captain
Chrissie Attura (Yarmouth, ME), and led 7-4. Lindsay Bucci
sandwiched a pair of goals around an Abelli tally and it was 8-6 at
halftime.
The Jumbos opened up some breathing room by scoring the
first two goals of the second half, by sophomore Amanda Roberts
(Wenham, MA) and junior Emily Johnson (Yarmouth, ME). Babson
was within three (11-8) when Anna Collins scored on a free-position shot
at 23:09. But from there, Tufts scored the next five and had a 16-8
advantage on a goal by first-year Lara Kozin (Suffern, NY) at
10:26. The teams traded goals during the final 10 minutes, with Abelli
netting her fifth of the game at the 5:19 mark.
The Jumbos got another good game in goal from sophomore
Sara Bloom (Summit, NJ), who made 10 saves. Attura had five
assists and Roberts also had a five-point game with three goals and two
assists. She controlled five draws as well.
Collins and Parker each scored three goals for Babson,
while senior captain Jackie Godfrey added two goals and four assists for
six points. Sophomore goalie Sarah Macary played all but three minutes
in net for the Beavers, finishing with nine saves.
Tufts returns home to host a NESCAC game against
Williams on Saturday. Babson remains in Floriday and plays Messiah on
Thursday.
