MEDFORD – Sophomore Liz Wise (Scarsdale, NY) scored the game-winning goal, her third of the game, with 3:32 remaining in the second half as third-ranked and once-beaten Amherst College escaped with an 8-7 victory at #16 Tufts University in NESCAC women's lacrosse play on Wednesday afternoon.

The Jeffs (10-1, 6-1 NESCAC) had to score twice in the final six minutes to win after losing a 4-1 halftime lead. Tufts (7-6, 3-5 NESCAC) battled back from the deficit to lead 7-6 on a goal by sophomore Lauren Murphy (Hingham, MA) with 8:56 left in regulation. Amherst's Alyssa Briody (Hopewell, NJ) scored at 5:16, assisted by Wise, to tie the score at 7-7, and then Wise scored less than two minutes later for the eventual winner.

The Amherst defense played well in the first half, holding Tufts to one goal while senior co-captain Liv D'Ambrosio (Farmington, CT) made five saves in the net. Wise scored twice and senior Ashley Harmeling (North Reading, MA) added the first of her three goals on the day to help the Jeffs get the 4-1 lead.

After Harmeling scored again to push the Amherst lead to 5-1 early in the second half, Tufts senior co-captain Megan Doughty (Brunswick, ME) led the Jumbo comeback. One of four seniors playing in their final home game at Tufts, Doughty scored three goals and had two assists, both on goals by junior Meredith Harris (Ridgewood, NJ), in the second half as the Jumbos surged to the 7-6 lead. However, Amherst took care of business to spoil the day for the Jumbos.

In addition to Wise and Harmeling's three goals, Briody added a goal and an assist to the Amherst attack. D'Ambrosio finished with seven saves total.

Doughty, Murphy (two goals) and Harris accounted for all the Tufts scoring. Senior goalkeeper Dana Panzer (Sayville, NY) finished with nine saves.
