MEDFORD Sophomore Lindsay Powers (Medway, MA) scored four goals and added an assist to lead the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears to a 10-6 victory over the Tufts University Jumbos in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon.
Bowdoin improves to 3-1 this year with its first NESCAC win (1-1). Tufts dropped its second straight, falling to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in the league. The Polar Bears have won four in a row in the series.
The Jumbos took a 1-0 lead on a goal by senior co-captain Jen Gregorian (Wayland, MA) 1:13 into the game. Bowdoin scored the next four goals, two by Powers, to lead 4-1 with 13:44 to play in the first half. Tufts was able to close the gap to 5-3 at halftime on a goal by sophomore Maureen Mahon (Oswego, NY) with 15 seconds remaining until the break.
Bowdoin scored the first five goals of the second half as their lead ballooned to 10-3 on Powers' fourth of the day with 8:17 left to play. The Jumbos scored the last three goals, including two in the final 18 seconds of play.
Junior Kristi Perine (Middlebury, VT) added two goals and two assists to the Bowdoin attack. Mahon and Gregorian each scored twice for Tufts. Junior Julia McCombs (Potomac, MD) earned the win in goal for Bowdoin with seven saves. Tufts sophomore keeper Ari Kristan (South Windsor, CT) made eight.
