MURPHY, THOMAS NAMED TO ALL-NESCAC WOMEN'S LACROSSE TEAMS

MEDFORD -- The 2007 Tufts University women's lacrosse team placed two players on the All-New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Second Team announced yesterday by the conference office. Senior co-captain and midfielder Lauren Murphy (Hingham, MA) and senior defender Jackie Thomas (Needham, MA) were the Jumbo selections.

Murphy was recognized by the conference's coaches for the third time. She was All-Conference Second Team in both 2006 as a junior and 2005 as a sophomore. Thomas is also a repeat selection, garnering Second Team honors last season.

One of the league's top two-way players during her career at Tufts, Murphy was second on the Jumbos with 37 points on 29 goals and eight assists this season. She tied for 11th in the league for goals scored on a Tufts team that was second-best in NESCAC with 12.86 goals per game. She also led Tufts with 30 draw controls, and was among the team leaders with 44 grounds balls and 24 caused turnovers. Murphy finishes her stellar Jumbo career with 73 goals and 31 assists for 104 points.

Thomas led Tufts in the defensive end, scooping up 45 ground balls and 36 caused turnovers. Her speed was also a key element in the team's transition game. She contributed offensively as well with four goals and five assists for nine points. Thomas started all 58 games during her four years at Tufts and graduates at the end of the month as one of the top defensive players in the program's history.

Tufts had a strange season, failing to qualify for the NESCAC Tournament despite posting convincing victories against second-seed Trinity and sixth-seed Amherst during the regular-season. Trinity, a team Tufts defeated 16-7, went on to receive an NCAA Tournament berth. Head coach Carol Rappoli's Jumbos finished 7-7 overall and 3-6 in the league.
