HERMAN, MURPHY SELECTED ALL-NESCAC WOMEN'S LACROSSE
MEDFORD – Senior defender Lauren Herman (Bala Cynwyd, PA/William Penn) and sophomore midfielder Lauren Murphy (Hingham, MA/Hingham) of the Tufts University Women's Lacrosse team both earned All-New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) honors for the 2005 season.
Herman was selected as one of three First Team players on defense. One of the best shut-down defenders in the league, she used her speed and quickness to neutralize an opponent's top offensive threat. She held Trinity's Bea Gratry, a 71-goal scorer this spring, to two goals, and Wesleyan's Becca Vogel, a 52-goal scorer, to one when those teams played the Jumbos. Though slight in stature, Herman possesses a devastating stick check. She also scored three goals with an assist, scooped up 40 ground balls, caused 24 turnovers, and controlled 14 draws.
Murphy was named to the Second Team. After scoring just one goal last year, she blossomed into one of the best two-way players in the league this year. She scored 24 goals with seven assists for 31 points, third on the Jumbos. She was second on the team with 42 ground balls, 19 draw controls and 35 caused turnovers. Her 17 goals in NESCAC games was second on the team and included three each against Trinity and three against Wesleyan. Her seven ground balls at Bates and five caused turnovers against Williams are two of the top totals of the season for the team.
Coach Carol Rappoli's Jumbos finished 8-7 overall in 2005. The Jumbos were tied for 16th in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association national poll.
