Amy Wilfert registered her first collegiate victory at Trinity

MANCHESTER, Conn. -- Junior Amy Wilfert (Westborough, MA) won the 2009 Trinity College Invitational by 16 seconds on Saturday to lead the Tufts University women's cross country team's season-opening effort. With three runners in the top 10 overall, Tufts placed second out of nine teams with 40 points behind first-place College of New Jersey (28).

Jumbos have won this race in each of the three years that the team has entered. Katy O'Brien was first in 2007, Stephanie McNamara (North Attleborough, MA) won last season and now Wilfert. Her time of 15:56 over four kilometers out-paced second-place Michelle Wallace from TCNJ. The victory is the first of Wilfert's collegiate career. She was a national qualifier last season and finished among the top 50 at the NCAA race.

Sophomore Bryn Kass (Santa Barbara, CA) also ran the best race of her Tufts career on Saturday at Trinity, taking fourth place with a 16:48 time. Sophomore Anya Price (Natick, MA) was eighth overall (17:09), giving Tufts a strong presence at the head of the pack. First-year Grace Hafner (Healdsburg, CA) was six seconds out of the top 10, timing 17:23 for 13th place. Junior Jen Yih (Palo Alto, CA) crossed the finish line in 17:35 for 17th place, rounding out the Tufts scoring.

Exactly 100 competitors finished the race overall.
