BECK NAMED ECAC CROSS COUNTRY PLAYER OF THE WEEK
MEDFORD -- With a stunning performance at the Connecticut College Invitational in Waterford,
Connecticut on Saturday, Tufts University junior Catherine Beck (Brookline,
NH/Hollis-Brookline) set a course record and has been honored as the Eastern
College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Player of the Week.
The junior tri-captain
finished the 5K course at Harkness Memorial State Park in 18 minutes, 6 seconds,
breaking the previous record by 17 seconds. She beat second-place finisher
Kathleen Henry of Division II Sacred Heart University by seven seconds. The
victory was the first of Beck's cross country career and helped the Jumbos
lead the 26-team field, with a team score of 55 points, 14 better than second
place College of New Jersey.
Beck led head coach
Kristen Morwick's Jumbos to their first NCAA Championship Race berth since
1999 last fall. She was the first Jumbo across the finish line eight times.
Tufts was ranked among the top 10 all season and took fifth at the NCAA New
England Championship Race. Beck was also a regular scorer for Tufts as a
freshman in 2004 when the team placed sixth in New England.
Tufts was ranked 20th
in the 2006 Pre-Season NCAA Cross Country Poll. The Jumbos race at UMass
Dartmouth this Saturday.
