BETTENCOURT TO SWIM AT NATIONALS FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR

Greg Bettencourt will swim in three events at the NCAA Championships in Houston March 15-17

MEDFORD -- The Official Psyche Sheet for the 2007 NCAA Division III Men's Swimming & Diving Championships was released today, and Tufts University senior co-captain Greg Bettencourt (West Granby, CT/Westminster School) will represent the Jumbos at the national meet to be held at the University of Houston March 15-17.

Bettencourt qualified in the 500 freestyle, where his time of 4 minutes, 36.27 seconds is ranked 16th heading into the NCAA's. He swam it last weekend in the preliminaries of the event at the NESCAC Championships hosted by Bowdoin College. Due to qualifying in one event, he will be able to swim in three events total at the NCAA meet. On the psyche sheet, Bettencourt is also on the list for the 200 freestyle and the 1,650 freestyle. His 1:42.45 in the 200 and 16:20.53 in the 1,650 are both ranked 25th nationally. Both times were submitted at the NESCAC meet, where he was the runner-up in the 200 and took fourth place in both the 500 and 1,650.

Last year, Bettencourt was one of seven Jumbos who qualified for the NCAA meet where Tufts took 10th place overall. In addition to his performance in several relays, he was eighth overall in the 500 freestyle at the 2006 Nationals. His preliminary time of 4:32.57 is the Tufts record in the event. He was also 13th in the 200 freestyle (1:41.78) and 39th in the 100 freestyle (47.91 seconds) at the NCAA meet last March.

According to the order of events, Bettencourt will compete in the 500 on Thursday, the 200 on Friday and the 1,650 on Saturday.
