BAKER EARNS ALL-AMERICAN STATUS AT SWIMMING NATIONALS
HOLLAND, Mich. -- Junior Brett Baker (Englewood, CO/Cherry
Creek) earned honorable mention All-American status in the
200-yard freestyle to highlight Tufts University's participation at
the 2005 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships. The meet
was hosted by Hope College in Michigan March 17-19.
Baker's 10th place finish in the 200 freestyle earned 10 points
for Tufts and a 45th place finish overall. He swam 1 minute, 41.83
seconds to tie for 11th place in the preliminaries on Friday. The
top 16 advanced to the final. In the final his time of 1:42.12 was
0.30 of a second out of eighth place.
Classmate Jon Godsey (Dallas, TX/Jesuit College Prep)
joined Baker in competing in three events apiece at the national
meet for the Jumbos. Godsey narrowly missed qualifying for the final
in the 100 backstroke on Friday. He swam 52.46 seconds in the
preliminaries to finish in a three-way tie for 16th place, forcing a
swim-off for the final spot into the final. His time of 52.72
seconds was second best, so he had to settle for 17th place overall.
Godsey also took 23rd place in the 200 backstroke on the final
day of competition Saturday, touching in 1:55.49. Baker was 34th in
the 100 freestyle that day, finishing in 47.38 seconds.
On the opening day of the meet Thursday, Godsey was 36th in the
200 individual medley with a time of 1:58.72 and Baker swam 51st in
the 50 freestyle at 22.33 seconds.
