HOYT NAMED INTERIM MEN'S SWIMMING COACH AT TUFTS
MEDFORD – Adam
Hoyt, the assistant Men's and Women's Swimming Coach at Trinity
College since 2001, has been named the interim Head Coach of the
Tufts University swimming program. A native of Orange, Connecticut
and a 2001 graduate of Hamilton College, Hoyt was named the fifth
head coach in the 59-year history of Tufts Swimming.
Don Megerle,
the Jumbos' mentor since 1971, is taking a leave of absence from
coaching for the 2004-05 academic year. A seven-time New England and
New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Coach of the
Year, Megerle will remain on campus working for the Athletic
Department in other capacities.
"Adam Hoyt is an
impressive young coach who is familiar with our program and our
conference, which will help him to hit the ground running," Athletic
Director Bill Gehling said. "Coach Megerle has fostered great
camaraderie in his program over the years, and Adam will look to
carry on that tradition, while adding his own stamp to the team."
Over the past three
years, Hoyt has been closely involved with rebuilding the program at
Trinity along with Head Coach Kristen Noone. In his three
years on the job, the men's team improved its numbers from eight
competitors to 15 and won five dual meets in 2003-04 after finishing
0-10 in 2001-02. On the women's side, the number of competitors grew
from 18 to 31 and amount of wins improved from three to six in his
first year on the job.
A member of the
strong swimming program at Hamilton College, Hoyt swam for
Continental teams that won two UNYSCSA championships. A versatile
swimmer who competed in the individual medleys, the 200 breaststroke
and 100 butterfly primarily, Hoyt was a conference finalist in each
of his four years at Hamilton.
"I'm very excited to
become a part of the strong tradition that Coach Megerle has built
with the Tufts swimming team," Hoyt said. "Tufts is a successful
program with competitors who show tremendous support for each other.
They are a tight-knit group, and I can't wait to coach them."
Tufts finished 8-1
during the dual meet season and was third at the NESCAC championship
meet last year. Five members of the team went on to compete at the
NCAA championship meet, including the 200 freestyle relay foursome
that finished 15th in the country.
